Imagine this: you’ll be going on a vacation and you’re wondering what clothes and shoes to pack, but you are overwhelmed by everything you want to take with you. That’s where a travel capsule wardrobe solves this problem! I have used a travel capsule wardrobe for years and I talk about the system often here on the blog! The majority of the pieces in the travel capsule are from the Hot Climate Spring/Summer 2026 Capsule Wardrobe in the Capsule Wardrobe Store.

I often use my Grid Mix & Match Packing Method and my Travel Wardrobe Packing Charts in packing my suitcase, but I’ve got another system for you to try. It’s the viral Sudoku Packing Method! Find out more about the Sudoku Packing Method which includes a video demo on Good Morning America!
What is the Sukoku Packing Method
The Sudoku Packing Method is a way of packing where every piece of clothing works with multiple other pieces—creating as many outfit combinations as possible from a small number of items. Instead of packing full outfits, you pack interchangeable pieces.
How It Works:
- Think of your wardrobe like a grid:
- Tops × Bottoms × Shoes
- Each item must:
- Mix and match easily
- Coordinate within a cohesive color palette
- The goal:
👉 Create maximum outfits from minimal pieces
Core Rule:
Every top should work with every bottom—and with most (if not all) shoes. If everything does not coordinate well, choose a different piece.
Traditional vs. Hot Weather Sudoku Packing
The traditional sudoku packing method is best for spring, fall and cooler climates and trips where the temperature varies and includes:
- Tops
- Bottoms
- Layers (jackets, cardigans, etc.)
The majority of Sudoku Packing Methods include tops, bottoms and layers, but when you are dressing for Hot Weather, it’s too hot and humid to wear layers! So, the solution to this dilemma is to swap the Layers with Shoes! Shoes are an important element of your outfits and changes up the look from casual to dressy.
The hot weather sudoku packing method includes:
- Tops
- Bottoms
- Shoes
Why The Hot Weather Sudoku Method Works Better for Summer
This method works in the summer and the shoes dramatically change the look of an outfit. It is perfect for the beach, Hawaii, tropical vacations, and summer travel where heat and humidity will be a factor.
👉 Example:
- Same outfit + sneakers = casual daytime
- Same outfit + flat sandals = relaxed
- Same outfit + elevated sandals = dressy
Step-by-Step: How to Build a Hot Weather Sudoku Packing Capsule
Here’s how to create your sudoku travel wardrobe in 4 steps.
Step 1: Choose a Cohesive Color Palette
- Neutrals (white, beige, tan, navy)
- Accent colors / patterns – optional (soft blue, sage, coral)
Step 2: Select Your Pieces
3 TOPS
- Lightweight, breathable (linen, cotton)
- Mix of basics + one elevated piece
3 BOTTOMS
- Shorts, skirts, or lightweight pants
- Neutral and versatile
3 SHOES
- Casual (sneakers or flat sandals)
- Everyday (comfortable sandals)
- Slightly dressy (slides or minimal heel)
Step 3: Build the “Sudoku Grid”
- Every top pairs with every bottom
- Every outfit works with at least 2 shoe options
Step 4: Create Your Outfits
- Horizontally
- Vertically
- Diagonal
- Work from the Corners

The 9-Piece Travel Capsule Using the Sudoku Packing Method
The majority of the pieces in the travel capsule are from the Hot Climate Spring/Summer 2026 Capsule Wardrobe in the Capsule Wardrobe Store.

Let’s look at the layout of the Sudoku Packing Grid…
Let’s add our pieces to the grid spaces.
HERE’S A TIP: Put the shoes you want to wear in the majority of the outfits in the middle of the grid (example shown below: the cognac slide sandals). Because of the way the grid works, the shoes that go in the middle of the grid will be the shoes will be in the majority of the outfits. If you will be doing a lot of walking, put the sneakers in the middle. If you won’t be doing much walking and more of a relaxing trip, then put the flat sandals in the middle, etc.
Row 1:
Flax Color Linen Top
Navy Linen Pants
Wedge Espadrille Sandals
Row 2:
Flax Linen Skirt
Cognac Slide Sandals
Blue Sleeveless Shirt
Row 3:
White Casual Sneakers
White Tee
Chambray Shorts
Here is how the Sudoku Packing Method works: 3 outfits horizontally, 3 outfits vertically, 1 outfit diagonal and several outfits working from each of the four corners..
The Outfits
Now, let’s see how many outfits we have ready to wear…
Add A Dress (Optional)
Do you want to pack a dress for a more dressy option? A light summer dress doesn’t take up much space in a suitcase! By adding a dress to your suitcase, you’ll have 3 more outfits: 1 casual, 1 dressy and 1 for walking all day!
The Sudoku Hot Climate Packing Sheet
Use the Sudoku Hot Climate Packing Sheet to create your own travel wardrobe! Download the sheet here (or click on the sheet image below), print the sheet, then write the clothes and shoes in the spaces on the grid. You can also save the image to your phone, edit the image to add the text names in the grids, then keep the sheet on your phone for reference. Refer to the sheet when you are on vacation to choose an outfit to wear everday!
Add some accessories to complete your outfits
Let me know in the comments if you enjoyed this post! ❤️

I enjoyed this post very much. I’m going to Europe for 2 weeks this summer with 1 week being a river cruise so I’m trying to find ways to have versatile outfits while packing carry on only. We plan to dress a little nicer for dinners since we will be celebrating some special birthdays with friends.
I’m glad you liked it Lori! This will work nicely for a river cruise as you will want to dress a bit elevated for that! Accessories like a fedora straw hat, scarf (can double as a shawl) and a straw belt (for dresses and skirs) can elevate your outfits. Have fun and safe travels on your trip 😃❤️
Love this. Thank you for sharing. Could you tell me where I can get the navy sleeveless dress?
Shannon, the dress is from LL Bean: https://liketk.it/62ac4?product=7a93ac9b-27c1-11f1-8f48-0242ac110024
Love this creative way to pack for summer! I’d throw the dress, a couple belts, a light rain jacket, and a cropped cardigan in to hopefully cover every scenario. Thank you for all your creative ideas!
Those are great additions Kelly! Thank you for suggesting those 😀❤️
As I’m quickly becoming a minimalist, I’d like to use this method to develop my whole wardrobe! Thank you for the clear explanation and instructions!
Love this post. I always overpack and am so excited to try this!! Even though I’ve traveled to lots of places over lots of years, these kind of packing posts are my very favorite!! Thanks
I’ve been packing like this for years and have my own templates (with an additional column for cooler weather so I can list jackets, scarves, cardigans, etc.) It works fantastically well. I also have one for evening wear (sparkly, lacy, or silk tops, floor length skirts, palazzo, heels, minaudieres) that helps me see combinations I already have in my closet and curbs my urge to go buy something new.
That’s great Ira! I have found doing just a bit of planning ahead and using a template to plan your travel wardrobe makes it so much easier to get dressed while on vacation.
Leanne 😃❤️
