Outdoors Camping Capsule Wardrobe Try-On Session: Patagonia, Kuhl, Prana, Chaco, Birkenstock
See everything I tried on for my Outdoors Camping Capsuling Wardrobe, what pieces I kept and which one I returned.
For the past few months, my Hubby and I have been spending more time outdoors, going on hikes, picnics and sightseeing. Up until the past few weeks, the Summer temps were nice (in the 80’s). But, now the temperature is in the 90’s and the humidity is here, I needed clothes that would be ideal for the heat. Plus, when you are outdoors, you don’t want to wear your nice white tops and linen shorts and pants, as they may get dirty. I set out to create an outdoors capsule wardrobe that I could wear when we do outdoor activities as well as camping.
Who Can Wear These Clothes and Shoes?
Even though these are clothes and shoes for my Outdoors/Camping Capsule Wardrobe, anyone can wear them! They are all-casual the pieces I tried on includes 2 skorts, so you can wear everything just at home or wear them out in town. The style is a cross between the Stay At Home Mom style and the Athleisure style, with breathable fabrics, several being moisture-wicking, so these clothes are great for the Summer!
When I shared this post on Instagram of an outfit from my outdoors camping capsule wardrobe (see the outfit below), several of you said that you needed a capsule wardrobe like that too! So, I’m sharing several blog posts on how I’m creating this capsule, from start to finish.

Planning for an outdoors camping capsule wardrobe
Anytime you create a capsule wardrobe, first you look at your lifestyle and where you will be wearing your clothes and shoes. Since we will be outdoors in the heat and humidity, I knew I needed clothes with breathable fabrics and deeper tone colors (no white). We do easy to moderate hiking, so lightweight clothes would be good. For shoes, comfort is most important and soles that would be durable for a lot of walking and hiking.
I shared this blog post last week, where I “shopped my closet” first and chose a few clothes and shoes that I could use in my capsule, like a pair of denim shorts, a camo tee, sneakers and sandals. Then, I visited my locally-owned outdoors shop and bought a few clothes for my capsule. Finally, I shopped online for missing pieces for my capsule.
Here are all the pieces I tried on for my Outdoors Camping Capsule Wardrobe. See what I kept and what I returned at the bottom of this post!
For size reference, my height is 5’9″ and I weigh about 160 lbs. For tops, I typically wear a size Medium (10) or Large (12), depending on the brand and style of the top (slim fit I usually wear a Large). For bottoms, my normal size is a size 10. My shoe size is 9.
I “shopped my closet” and tried on this camo tee (sold out) (similar style, different pattern & similar tee), denim shorts (sold out) (love these raw hem denim shorts) and Birkenstock Granada sandals in “tobacco color” I already had these in my closet, size 9/40.

Next, I tried on a few pieces I ordered online with the clothes I bought locally. This Patagonia Mainstay Tank in “Pacific Stripe” fit perfectly (size Large) (also here). I love the blue tone, which goes well with the Kuhl Trekr shorts in “Stone” (size 12). I’m also wearing my Birkenstock Granada sandals in “tobacco color” size 9/40.

I also ordered this Patagonia Mount Airy Scoop Tee in “Berlin Blue” (size Large) (also here). I’m wearing the top with these Patagonia Happy Hike shorts in “Ink Black” (size Large) and my Skechers Sneakers (similar style) I already had these in my closet (size 9).

In the photo below, I wore the Patagonia Mount Airy Scoop Tee in “Berlin Blue” the other day with the Kuhl Trekr shorts in “Stone” and Birkenstock Granada sandals in “tobacco”. My Ragdoll cat Bartholomew “Barty” wanted his photo made too!

I love this Patagonia Fitz Roy Bear Organic Tee (gray, yellow, blue colors) (here for the peach, gray, green colors) size Large. I’m wearing the tee with these Patagonia Happy Hike shorts in “Ink Black” (size Large) and these Reef Black Waterproof Slide Sandals size 9.

I also ordered this Patagonia Mount Airy Scoop Tee in “Mellow Melon” (size Large) (also here), but for some reason the fit was just a bit tighter than the blue tee above. I returned this one, since I preferred the blue color and the melon didn’t look good with my skin tone. I tried the tee on with these Patagonia Quandary Shorts in “Shale” size 10. And, OMG I love these Chaco ZCloud Sandals in “Excite B/W” size 9. I have an older green pair with the Classic footbed, but this pair with the ZCloud footbed is much more comfortable to me! I highly recommend them!

I LOVE this Patagonia Capilene Cool Graphic Tee in “Feather Grey” size Large. It has the moisture wicking and UPF 50+ fabric, which is a plus when in the heat and sun. I’m wearing it with my denim shorts (sold out) (love these raw hem denim shorts) and the Chaco ZCloud Sandals in “Excite B/W” size 9.

If you gonna be camping, might as well wear a “Happy Camper” top! I found these adorable tops on Amazon (both are on Prime for fast shipping) and had to get both of them. They are SO SOFT and are less than $18 each! You could wear these tops camping, out running errands or wear them while staying at home. The “Happy Camper” Tank comes in several colors (I’m wearing the “Sunrise Gray” color, size Large) and this tank style also comes in other styles as well on the product page, like “Good Vibes”, “Sunshine and Whiskey”, “Stay Golden” and a few more. See a closeup of the graphic on the front of the tank, it has a slightly worn look which adds to the style of the tank! I’m wearing the tank with these Patagonia Happy Hike shorts in “Ink Black” size Large and the Chaco ZCloud Sandals in “Excite B/W” size 9.

I also ordered this “Happy Camper” Graphic Tee in “Gray” size Large, also on Amazon Prime for fast shipping! They have 5 colors and styles to choose from. We have a camper trailer, so I ordered the one I’m wearing below. They also have a popup camper graphic tee, which is so cute too! It was tough choosing which top to include in my outdoors camping capsule, but I decided to wear this one as a sleep shirt with some comfy shorts while camping!

Since my capsule wardrobe has a Black base color, I bought this budget-friendly Old Navy EveryWear Tank Top in “Black Jack”, size Large, to include in my capsule. I bought a striped one too, see below). I’m wearing it with the Patagonia Tech Fishing Skort in “forge grey” and Chaco ZCloud Sandals in “Excite B/W”.

My most favorite pattern to wear is Stripes, so I HAD to include this Old Navy EveryWear Striped Pocket Tank Top (or here) size Large in my capsule! I love the thin black stripes and the v-neck style! It coordinates well with this Patagonia Fleetwith Skort in “Black”, size Large. I just LOVE wearing these skorts! Since they have shorts built in, you don’t have to be too careful about movement, plus they look a bit feminine than just wearing shorts all the time.

What I Returned
The only item I returned was the Patagonia Mount Airy Scoop Tee in “Mellow Melon” (also here). Since I didn’t have any clothes made for the outdoors, I needed several of them. I’ll be able to use several of these pieces for my Fall Outdoors Camping Capsule Wardrobe, which I’ll add a few leggings and jackets for cooler temps.
How Did You Like This Try-On Session?

I love the idea of a camping capsule…thanks for sharing. I know you will have fun exploring in your new camper. We have been life-long campers starting with a tent and then a pop up. At this time we have a permanent trailer at a campground but we’ve talked about getting a small travel trailer when we retire so we can go back out on the road. Enjoy and share pictures of your adventures!
Thanks for the outdoors try on session! Great idea for an outdoors capsule. Summer and fall are the best times for hiking and camping.
You should absolutely try some of the Title Nine clothes. This company is by women for women and everything is great. Bra sized swimsuits and the skirts are my favorites. I LIVE in these clothes all summer. Of course I live n Colorado so this style is always “in”, but really, give them a try!
