19-Piece Summer Outdoors/Camping Capsule Wardrobe

| |

See all the clothes and shoes in my Summer 2020 Outdoors Camping Capsule Wardrobe and find out how I created it for my closet!

I created my 32-Piece Summer 2020 Capsule Wardrobe, but with my Hubby and I doing lots of outdoor activities like going on hikes and picnics and going camping, I needed a capsule wardrobe just for the outdoors!

If you are new here at Classy Yet Trendy®, I’m Leanne, the creator and administrator of this site. I have been using a capsule wardrobe since 2014 and consider myself a bit of a pro when it comes to creating capsule wardrobes! I publish several Seasonal Capsule Wardrobes, along with the best selling Women’s Simplified Style®: A Year-Round Core Closet Essentials Capsule Wardrobe and the Men’s Simplified Style® eBook. I not only create capsule wardrobe eBooks for many women around the world, but I also create and use my own personal capsule wardrobe in my closet.

Every season I create my own personal capsule wardrobe and here on the blog I share with you all everything in my capsule. You can see all my previous capsule wardrobes here!

Capsule Wardrobe Base Color

In deciding what clothes I wanted in my Outdoors Summer capsule wardrobe, first I chose my base color, which is the first step in my post, How To Create a Capsule Wardrobe: A 5-Step Visual Guide.  I decided on Black as my base color.  Then, I added clothes in 3 accent colors: turquoise, blue and peach.  I used mostly darker color tones, with the accent colors being in deeper tones that would work well in the outdoors.

Be sure to see my outfits that I post on my Instagram! Throughout the season, I share several outfits that I wear from my capsule wardrobe.

Can You Wear This Capsule Wardrobe Everyday?

Even though these are clothes and shoes for my Outdoors/Camping Capsule Wardrobe, you can wear this capsule everyday! This is an all-casual capsule, so you can wear it just at home or wear it like a regular, everyday capsule wardrobe. The style is a cross between the Stay At Home Mom style and the Athleisure style, with breathable fabrics, several being moisture-wicking, so these clothes are great for the Summer!

Here’s is my Outdoors Camping Summer 2020 capsule wardrobe on my wooden clothes rack:

Shown on the clothes rack, “Patagonia Label Gray Cap”

If you are limited on space, you can keep your capsule wardrobe on a clothes rack like the one shown above! In the photo above, I hung my tops and pants on the top rack, then on the middle rack I stacked my shorts and placed two pairs of sandals next to them. On the bottom rack, I have the rest of my sandals. I fit all 32 pieces of my capsule wardrobe on this compact clothing rack!

Planning for an outdoors camping capsule wardrobe

Anytime you create a capsule wardrobe, first you look at your lifestyle and where you will be wearing your clothes and shoes. Since we will be outdoors in the heat and humidity, I knew I needed clothes with breathable fabrics and deeper tone colors (no white). We do easy to moderate hiking, so lightweight clothes would be good. For shoes, comfort is most important and soles that would be durable for a lot of walking and hiking.

I shared this blog post last week, where I “shopped my closet” first and chose a few clothes and shoes that I could use in my capsule, like a pair of denim shorts, a camo tee, sneakers and sandals. Then, I visited my locally-owned outdoors shop and bought a few clothes for my capsule. Finally, I shopped online for missing pieces for my capsule.

Be sure to see everything I tried on in this post, “Outdoors Camping Capsule Wardrobe Try-On Session.”

I created my personal capsule wardrobe using my capsule wardrobe process, which you can see here in this blog post, How To Create A Capsule Wardrobe: A 5-Step Visual Guide. You can download, print and use this Capsule Wardrobe In 5-Steps guide sheet to help create a capsule wardrobe, which is on the Capsule Wardrobe Tools page.

Capsule Wardrobe Storage & Equipment

I use wooden hangers to hang my clothes in my capsule wardrobe. Using wooden hangers keep my tops from stretching. I use the Ikea Bumerang Natural Color Wood Hangers and LOVE them! I also really like these Wal-Mart Wood Hangers, which are similar. For my clothes that are in my closet that are not in my capsule wardrobe, I hang them on these velvet hangers.  If you have limited space to store your off-season clothes, I recommend this Large Storage Bin with Snap Lid. These bins are stackable too!

Now onto my capsule wardrobe!  I have 19 items in my Outdoors Camping Summer 2020 capsule wardrobe.

I’ll be adding a few additions to my outdoors camping capsule wardrobe that are necessary, like sunglasses, a sackpack/backpack, sports bras, belt bag and a hat to shield my head from the sun.

  1. This is a perfect casual summer wardrobe. Living in the south the breathable fabrics are wonderful. This is one of your best capsules. Thanks for sharing this new time in life with us.

  2. Love a skort! My fav army green skort got a -horrible stain, actually, I dropped some glue on it and didn’t notice. Tried everything to remove it, made it worse. I wear it to Do my gardening now. I was so inspired by your post, as always, and I ordered a new skort, black, on sale! Score. Great post, from you, again, as always. Have a great day!

  3. You are underestimating the need for long sleeves/pants. If you are in the mountains or sitting around an evening campfire, it my be 30 degrees cooler than when the sun was out. They can also offer sun and bug protection. I recommend a long sleeve button down shirt and a pair of hiking pants (or at least capris).

  4. Valerie,

This Summer we will be camping a lot in our state of Alabama, which is very hot and HUMID. The kind of humidity where you just walk outside and you start sweating, LOL! Evening temps are average 70’s, which is still warm. In my post I do recommend adding leggings, a cardigan and a lightweight jacket, but that depends on the weather where you are at.

  5. Jill,

That’s a bummer that your skort was stained. The army green is good to coordinate with lots of tops. I was going to just have the dark gray skort in my capsule, but I loved wearing it so much the first time, I bought a black skort too!

  6. Thank you Rhonda! Yes, I agree, the breathable fabrics are much better than just cotton fabrics when outside in the humidity.

  7. I was about to comment on adding in the same items. I am so used to getting out of hot Texas that I search for a place where I get to wear long pants and a hoodie at some point. 🙂

  8. This is a great capsule. I have been considering an SPF long sleeve shirt to my outdoor wardrobe. I am trying to find one that is very light weight. On a hike recently, lots of people were wearing these thin “sun hoodies” they called them and said they were key to their hikes. So far I’ve only found ones that look very thick and hot.

  9. This is a perfect capsule for everyday life (or at least half of the year) here in East Texas for a lady who spends a lot of time outdoors caring for animals and a garden. Thank you for posting!

  10. I would love to see more capsules like this. We plan to buy a small trailer and do a LOT of traveling in retirement, so clothing will need to be minimal. I like that it’s a little bit less “Athleisure” and even more casual than “S@HM”. I could see doing at capsule like this and perhaps supplementing it with a 10 piece French Minimalist traveling capsule for casual ‘date nights’ for dining out and other off campground activities. Thank you!! More please for Fall and Spring! Especially for those who, from NE, would be traveling in winter to warmer climes.

  11. I have a very thin hoodie from Exofficio that has bug repellent. It’s great for any outdoor activity, even if it’s hot. It is called Modena. Their entire line of BugsAway is great!

  12. I really love this idea of a camping capsule. There is always something that dirties/ scratches your clothes when camping. I very rarely buy Pantagonia because the sizing is just too big for 4’11”, but I will shop my closet for a capsule to designate just for camping.
However, I am curious if you have worn the skorts and how they have held up. It seems ideal for travel to places that require skirts/dresses for females.
To me, the real test of whether an item is good in a capsule is how is wears and washes, not how it looks when first tried on.
Can’t wait for the cool weather camp capsule! Thanks

  13. Donna,

I love wearing the skorts. I wore one while we were on our camping trip and the other one hiking. The material kept me cool in the humid weather and they are very comfortable.
