How To Create A Loungewear Capsule Wardrobe

When it comes to loungewear, there are several types to choose from.  There’s the traditional pajamas (top and bottom in the same or coordinating pattern), there’s matching top and shorts, gowns and robes, just to name a few.  I used to wear pajama sets as loungewear in the evenings and sometimes on the weekend, I grew tired of wearing the same tops and bottoms together all the time.  Plus, I didn’t like being in my pajamas all day.  I thought there’s got to be a better way of being comfortable and looking good too!  That’s when I created my own loungewear capsule wardrobe.  I’ve had several requests to share with you all my loungewear capsule, so read on to find out what’s in it!

How To Create a Loungewear Capsule Wardrobe

Three years ago I created my first capsule wardrobe.  Since then, my closet is always neat and organized.  I know exactly what clothes and shoes are in my closet and I get dressed quickly everyday.  I used to get stressed out trying to find clothes in my closet and having to put an outfit together, since the majority of my clothes did go well together.  But now since I use a capsule wardrobe, I know exactly what I want to wear everyday.  Each season I use my 5-step process to create my capsule wardrobes using my neutral-colored core essentials.

The key to an efficient closet is that everything in the capsule wardrobe coordinates with each other!  This year, I applied the same capsule wardrobe system for my clothes to my loungewear, the clothes I wear in the evening, sometimes during the weekends and even to sleep in.  Before I started using a capsule wardrobe for my loungewear, I wore pajama sets and gowns.  In the cold months, I wore a bulky robe and in the cool months I wore a lightweight robe.

This capsule wardrobe concept is the same that I share in the Capsule Wardrobe eBooks in the eBook Store.  There are several styles of wardrobe plans to choose from and each eBook includes a step-by-step guide to creating your own capsule wardrobe, all the recommended pieces (most are basic essentials), 100 outfit ideas, a travel packing guide and more!  Thousands of women have transformed their closets using these convenient wardrobe plans!

I got the idea for a loungewear capsule wardrobe from a cardigan I purchased from Kohls for my Fall capsule wardrobe.  After I wore it one time, feeling how soft and lightweight it was, I thought it would be a great substitute for a robe!  I liked the idea of not fussing with the tie around my waist on my robe.

My loungewear capsule consists of 15 pieces that are tees, leggings, joggers and a cardigan.  This capsule will make 48 loungewear outfits!  Instead of a robe I’ve been wearing a lightweight cardigan, which feels like a robe, but without the tie around the waist.  The color palette of my capsule is black and gray, which means everything coordinates, so whatever top and bottom I pull out of the drawer, it will match.  I could also add a few tops in one or two accent colors for some added color.

I bought my graphic tees at Target and Old Navy.  The gray and black pocket v-neck tees were part of a 3-pack from Shopbop; they are so soft!  I bought the bottoms at American Eagle, Old Navy and Target.  I currently have short sleeve tees in my capsule, but long sleeve tees would work as well.  I could even add one or two sweatshirts to this capsule for added warmth.

How To Create a Loungewear Capsule Wardrobe

Here’s how to create your own loungewear capsule wardrobe:

1. Choose about 5 or 6 bottoms in neutral colors (black, gray or navy), either leggings or joggers.  For the leggings, you want them to fit but not be too tight.  You want them to be comfortable enough to wear around the house and sleep in.

2. Choose about 8 tops in a combination of graphics tees and solid tees.  You can use all neutral colors using the same color palette as step 1, or you can add in one or two tops in an accent color (like pink, purple, blush, burgundy, etc).  Either short sleeve or long sleeve works well.

3. Choose your layers.  You can use a lightweight open cardigan, sweatshirt or a robe.

4. Add a pair of slippers or slip-on sneakers and you’re done!

So, onto what is in my loungewear capsule…

Now, onto the loungewear outfits.  Here’s one outfit combination, consisting of a gray graphic tee and black leggings:

The same graphic tee (below) can be worn with 2 additional leggings, the black marled leggings and the gray marled leggings, which would make 3 different outfits

The black graphic tee (below) is shown with 4 different bottoms.  Because the color of the top is black, it look great with any of the bottoms.

The charcoal gray graphic tee (below) also looks great with 3 different bottoms: the black marled leggings, the black leggings and the gray marled leggings.  The solid black and gray tees can also be worn with all of the leggings.

I didn’t include my pink faux fur slippers in the photos, as they are sold out, but here’s a pair made by the same company in a pink cable knit version.  I have these slippers on my wishlist to add a bit of color to my loungewear capsule wardrobe!  How cute are these pom pom slippers?!  Here’s a pair of UGG look-a-like slippers but for less than half the price!  This pair of faux fur lined slippers look cozy warm!

  1. Love the ebooks! Could you please do a ‘Basic Capsule Wardrobe for Color Lovers’? A happy one you can use on it’s own but also together with one of the other season’s ebooks of your choice. To help all lovers of color and capsuling along. 🙂

  2. Love!, I used an old gray t-shirt-like cardigan as my summer-time robe and really liked it. Am using an old black/gray/cream zip-up shawl lately and thought about building an “at home” capsule, but wasn’t sure how to. I realize now I need to separate my work-out from my at-home stuff. Thank you for sharing!

  3. When visiting friends, I “lucked” into wearing a bigger navy cardigan as my robe. It was perfect to appear nicer when coming down for breakfast and sitting around for a leisurely breakfast! This year I have gotten into comfy ponte pants to level up my at home attire on the weekends. I can run to the store and run into people and still feel good about myself without sacrificing comfort.

  4. I am retired and couldn’t figure out why the capsule wardrobe was not working for me. This post explained it. I have two wardrobes – one lounging for every day and one a little bit nicer for going out, shopping, lunch etc.

Until I understood the two wardrobes, I couldn’t make it work. Now, I have my lounging capsule in my dresser and my “other” wardrobe in my closet and I have a ton of outfits to wear. My base is navy and gray and my two accent colors are blush and white for both wardrobes. It works!! Thanks so much for this post!
