How To Add Accent Colors To Your Capsule Wardrobe: An Easy 3-Step Guide

|

When you are putting together pieces for your capsule wardrobe, it is important to include several wardrobe basics in neutral colors, like a white tee, a black skirt and nude color sandals. But what about accent colors? How do you choose what accent color or colors to include in your capsule and how many can you have?

We all have our favorite colors to wear! My personal favorite colors are black, white, almond and light blue. I also love a bit of olive, which is a lovely earthy tone. Olive is subtle and adds just a touch of color to an outfit in a soft hue. You may like colors like red, yellow, vivid blue or turquoise. It is easy to include any of those colors in a capsule wardrobe!

Step 1: Choose Your Accent Color(s)

Neutral colors, like black, white, and gray, are easy to include since they all coordinate with one another. But when it comes to accent colors, too many colors and too many patterns in different hues can be difficult to coordinate with other colors. When I advise others on how many colors to include in a capsule wardrobe, I recommend including 1 to 3 accent colors, which are easy to mix with the neutral colors in your capsule.

Here a few examples of accent color combinations for a capsule wardrobe:

Step 2: Select Your Clothes And/Or Shoes

Now that you have chosen your accent color(s), it’s time to select the pieces you want to include in your capsule wardrobe! I recommend adding 1 to 3 pieces in each color to your capsule. For the capsule wardrobe I created below, I chose the accent color as olive. I added 3 pieces in that color: an olive tee, a striped olive tank and olive shorts, all in a similar olive tones. That way, if I want to wear the olive pieces together, say the tee and shorts or the tank and shorts, the color tones will match.

Step 3: Wear Your Accent Color(s) In Outfits

I created a mini capsule wardrobe with pieces from my summer capsule wardrobe, which includes the neutral colors black, white, flax and the accent color olive. I could have added another accent color, but for learning purposes in this post, I included only one accent color.

  1. This neutral capsule wardrobe is so cute! Since switching to neutrals I find I love all of my clothes and everything goes together. I have something similar to nearly all of these pieces in my closet and appreciate your ideas on styling them. I think I would choose a gray tee instead of the solid olive one because of my coloring but everything else is perfect. Thank you for your posts! ❤️

  2. Kelly,

Gray would be a great sub for the olive tee! I’m glad you like the post. 😀❤️

  3. Wonderful ideas! I love your capsule wardrobe ideas. I have a lot of Clothing that is colorful. I noticed most all your clothing is one color. I have lots of different prints in my wardrobe. Most all are pink, turquoise, teal and sky blue. I get bored easily wearing clothing that is only one color. Could I substitute the blue shirt for a patterned print, for instance, and still keep the same design in mind?
Do you understand what I mean? Thanks!!

  4. Beverly,

If you love color, feel free to substitute any of the pieces in the capsule for those you like. Make sure to include several neutral color wardrobe essentials to make your capsule cohesive.
