Try-On Session: J. Crew, Nordstrom, Veja, Lilysilk, Anine Bing, Banana Republic

When we plan our next season capsule wardrobes, we “shop our closets” to see what we have that we want to include in our capsule and shop for any pieces that need to be replaced or that we would like to add to our closet.

A couple of weeks ago, I started planning my own Fall capsule wardrobe. First, I went through my closet and pulled out my wardrobe staples that I wanted to include in my capsule. Then, I made a list of items that I wanted to include in my capsule and went shopping for them. My preferred way to shop is online. I save the most money by comparing prices from different retailers, plus shopping online allows me to shop with purpose and not spend money on things I don’t need!

When my orders came in, I took photos of how they fit and am sharing them with you all here on the blog!

For size reference, I am 5’9″ in height. For tops, I typically wear a size Medium, but size up to a Large sometimes, depending on the brand and style of the top. For bottoms, my normal size is a size 10 / 30 waist. My shoe size is a 9 medium width.

Let’s get started with the try-on session…

This Vince Camuto Leopard V-Neck Top (size Medium) is SO pretty and fit beautifully. The pattern was a bit too dark for my complexion, but I do recommend this top! If the pattern had been a bit lighter, I would have kept it. This is a versatile top that you can wear casually with jeans, like I styled it below, or you could wear it to work with a skirt or dress pants, blazer and pumps. I really love these AG Prima Mid Rise Ankle Cigarette Jeans (sized up to a 31). AG is one of my favorite denim brands and I have been wanting to try their cigarette jeans. The fit is almost like a skinny jean, but the legs are just a bit loose. I think their Cigarette Jeans is a hybrid of a skinny and a slim straight style. I kept these jeans! I’m also wearing the Steve Madden Finn Chain Mules in the “tan suede” color (size 9) that I bought from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (see all the posts here from the sale).

A pair of shoes I have had my eye on is the Veja Campo Sneakers (size 40EU). I love the sleek design of these sneakers, plus like that they are made with high-quality recycled materials, organic cotton, and sustainably-sourced leather! I had heard from other fashion influencers that the V-10 and Esplar styles were uncomfortable at first, due to the tongue of the shoe, and took some time to break in. A few fashion influencers who have the Campo style said they were comfortable right out of the box. I ordered the Campo style with the “natural suede” logo and they are so comfortable. I haven’t worn them much because I also have a pair coming with the black logo, so I will choose which color to keep then.

I’m wearing the Veja Campo Sneakers (size 40EU) in the outfit below. When I went to Express a few weeks ago and bought my Knit Double Breasted Boyfriend Blazer in the “pecan” color (size Medium), I wanted a black blazer too, so I ordered this Supersoft Twill Boyfriend Black Blazer (size Medium) and I love it! I also ordered this ATM Schoolboy Cotton Crewneck White Tee (sized up to a Large) to try. The fit was ok, was a little shorter than I would like and the material has a different texture to it, making it a unique style tee. I prefer a smooth material and a longer length since I am long waisted, so the tee didn’t work for me. I’m also wearing the AG Prima Mid Rise Ankle Cigarette Jeans (sized up to a 31).

I ordered these Gucci Princetown Mules (sized up to a 9 1/2). Earlier this year I bought the Gucci Brixton Black Loafers (fits true to size, I wear a size 9). I love how the loafers fit, they are very comfortable right out of the box. The Sam Edelman Loraine Loafers look very similar to the Gucci loafers and I recommend the Loraine loafers! I love wearing mules in the Fall and Spring, so I ordered the Gucci Princetown Mules initially in a size 9.5. They recommend to size up a 1/2 size, but they a tad too short, so I ordered a size 10. The size 10 arrived, I tried them on, but they just didn’t feel right on my feet, so I returned them (they felt too narrow on my feet). I have the Sam Edelman Linnie Bit Mules so I’ll either be wearing those or my Gucci loafers this Fall.

When I went to Banana Republic a couple of weeks ago, I saw this Sweater With Silk in the “white” color (size Medium). It’s not white, but an ivory color and is washable! It is a crewneck style with a straight band hem and is semi-fitted. I liked it so much that I also bought the “cool beige” color. It comes in other colors too! I’m also wearing the AG Prima Mid Rise Ankle Cigarette Jeans (sized up to a 31) and the Gucci Princetown Mules.

Lilysilk reached out to me for a collaboration and I tried this Cashmere V-Neck Sweater in the “greige” color (size Medium). I’m so happy I picked this sweater because I absolutely love it! The cashmere is soft and is washable too. The fit is perfect and the color is so pretty. I’m adding this sweater to my Fall capsule wardrobe for sure! I also tried on these AG Prima Mid Rise Cigarette Jeans in the “super black” color (sized up to a 31). These are the same fit as the blue color I showed above. I’m keeping these jeans as well as they fit perfect. When I saw these Cap Toe Slingback Flats (size 9), I knew I wanted to try these on! I ordered these and when they arrived I knew I was keeping these shoes, since they look like a Chanel style! I also have the Vaneli Aliz Cap Toe Pumps but they are a dressier shoe and I was needing something to wear everyday.

I added this Knit Double Breasted Boyfriend Blazer in the “pecan” color (size Medium) a couple of weeks ago. I tried it on in Express and loved the color and fit! I look forward to wearing this blazer to church with my pants outfits. This blazer also looks great with jeans! I’m also wearing the Cashmere V-Neck Sweater in the “greige” color, AG Prima Mid Rise Cigarette Jeans in the “super black” color and Cap Toe Slingback Flats.

I ordered this J. Crew Juliette Sweater Blazer in the “hthr khaki” color (size Medium). I could have ordered a small since it does run big, but since I’ll be wearing sweaters with it, I’m keeping it! This is the same color as my Sophie Sweater Blazer (see me wearing it here in this try-on session). J. Crew is discontinuing the Sophie sweater blazer and is replacing it with the Eloise Sweater Blazer style. I also tried on the Ella Long Sweater Blazer in the “hthr khaki” color (size Medium). While I liked the color on this sweater blazer, I liked the Juliette Sweater Blazer more. The Ella would be a great alternative to a wool coat, especially if have mild winters where you live! You may want to size down in the Ella sweater blazer.

I ordered this J. Crew Black Pull-On Slip Skirt (size Large) and absolutely love it! I’ll be wearing this to church this Fall and Winter. I’m wearing it with the Lilysilk Cashmere V-Neck Sweater in the “greige” color and the Cap Toe Slingback Flats.

Here is another skirt I ordered and will be keeping it! It’s from Amazon and is the Black Polka Dot Skirt (size Large). It was less than $30 and is such a pretty skirt! I’m wearing it with the Sweater With Silk in the “cool beige” color (size Medium) and the Cap Toe Slingback Flats (size 9).

I found this Chunky Crewneck Sweater on Amazon in the “oatmeal heather” color (size Medium). I cannot believe it’s less than $30 and it’s 100% cotton, so soft! I look forward to wearing this sweater in the cooler months. You could layer a shirt or turtleneck underneath it for the Winter! I’m wearing the AG Mari Slim Straight Jeans (sized up to a 31) I bought from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. These jeans are a longer length and have a wider leg opening, which look great with flats and booties! I’m also wearing the Steve Madden Finn Chain Mules in the “tan suede” color (size 9).

I have been looking for a pair of dark wash jeans, like really dark to wear with my lighter color tops this Fall. I ordered three pairs from J. Crew to see how they fit…

The first dark wash pair I tried on were these Demi-Boot Crop Jeans (size 30). They have a button fly and a raw hem and are such a nice pair of jeans. They have some stretch to them, but will hold their shape, which is great when you wear them all day! I’m wearing them with the Lilysilk Cashmere V-Neck Sweater in the “greige” color (size Medium) and the Steve Madden Finn Chain Mules in the “tan suede” color (size 9).

I really love this Eloise Sweater Blazer in the “hthr gray” color (size Medium)! It comes in several other colors too, including the popular “hthr khaki” color. Sweater Blazers are one of my favorite pieces to wear in the cooler months since they feel like a cardigan, but have a polished look of a blazer. Yep, I’ll be keeping this blazer! The next pair of dark wash jeans I tried on were these Vintage Slim Straight Jeans (size 30). I wished they were a tad more slim as they felt more like just a straight style, which I felt were a bit baggy on me. I prefer a slim style. I’m also wearing the Girlfriend Crewneck Striped Tee from J. Crew Factory (size Large) and the Gucci Princetown Mules.

The last pair of dark wash jeans from J. Crew I tried on were these High Rise Toothpick Jeans (sized up to a 31). I loved how these fit in the waist (my preferred high rise style), but the legs fit like a skinny jean. I wished these were just a slim style and they would have been perfect. I’m wearing my Halogen Crewneck Gray Tee (size Large) and the Veja Campo Sneakers (size 40EU).

I ordered this Anine Bing Army Utility Jacket (size Large) and love how soft the material is! It is an investment jacket, so if you need a similar lower-priced one, I recommend this Graham & Spencer Utility Jacket. I’m also wearing the Halogen Crewneck Gray Tee, High Rise Toothpick Jeans and the Veja Campo Sneakers. If you need a utility jacket at a different price point, I recommend either this Army Jacket or this Anorak Jacket.
