Old Navy Dressing Room Try-On Session – July 2019

|

So, here lately, I’m wanting to switch out a few pairs of shorts in my Summer Capsule Wardrobe and replace them with some Summer pants. When I take my daughter to her doctor appointments and treatments, the offices are always so cold, so it’s better to wear pants and sleeves just to keep from freezing. And, I don’t know about where you live, but restaurants here in the South are always so cold. So, I confess, I have pulled out a couple pairs of my jeans that I had in my Spring Capsule Wardrobe and have worn them when I know I’ll get cold.

I want to swap my khaki shorts for a pair of beige linen pants like these or this budget pair of beige linen drawstring pants, the same style featured in The French Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe: Summer 2019 Collection. And, swap my black shorts with a pair of black pants, like these The Easy Chino or this pair of mid-rise slim wide leg black pants or these Huston Pull-On Crop Pants.

Earlier this week, my daughter spent the day with her dad, so I had a chance to go to our local Old Navy and try on a few clothes. In particular, I was looking for the mid-rise slim wide leg black pants and the pair of beige linen drawstring pants. See the previous try-on session, Old Navy Try-On Session April. Old Navy is currently having a 4th of July sale and everything is up to 60% off!

Here is what I wore from my Summer capsule wardrobe:

White Crew Neck Tee
High-Rise 5″ Linen-Cotton Short
Leanor Druzy Pendant Necklace
Sam Edelman Bay Slides in “saddle” – 7 other colors too (I’ve worn these a lot this Summer, so comfy!)

First, a few notes about sizing for me at Old Navy: Normally, I’m a size Medium/Large or size 10 in pants, but at Old Navy I have to size up to a Large or size 12. For tops, sometimes I wear a Medium (my normal size) or Large at Old Navy, depending on the cut and style of the top.

Here is everything I tried on:

I saw a few pairs of the beige linen tapered drawstring pants, but not in my size Large, so I tried on a Medium just to see how they looked on. The Medium was a tad bit tight, but I love the style of them: the drawstring waist, the slightly cropped length, the softness of the fabric and the color too. They also had them in the store in the black color, but because I’m particular with what I buy to include in my capsule wardrobe, I’m set on just adding a beige pair as they will go with several tops in my capsule. With the pants, I also tried on the Ruffle-Trim Linen-Blend Top in “antique coral” in a size Large. I didn’t buy the top since I have all the tops I need in my Summer capsule wardrobe, but I loved the color, fit and style of it! If they would have had the pants in a Large, I would have bought the pants.

I found these mid-rise slim wide leg chinos, but not in the black color I was looking for, but in the “creme de la creme” color. They didn’t have a size 12, so I tried on a size 10. They fit a bit snug, but I loved the style! I’m going to order these online in Black in a size 12 and see how they fit. I’m also wearing the Ruffle-Trim Linen-Blend Top in “antique coral” from above.

I saw this Striped Linen-Blend Wrap Top in “blue/white stripe” in a size Large and this High-Rise White Denim Frayed-Hem Mini Skirt in a size 10. I have loved wearing linen this Summer and I was SO tempted to buy this top! They also had it in the red stripe and both colors are pretty. There are two places to tie the top, one on the inside and the outside, so it stays tied. There is also a plastic snap where the two sides join between the chest, so everything stays fastened! The size Large fit perfectly. This white denim skirt was hanging beneath the wrap top, so I had to try it on as well. It is a raw hem style with a zig-zag seam on the front, so cute! The size 10 was a bit snug, probably the size 12 would have fit better, but they didn’t have one in stock. It’s a good length for a mini skirt, but I would prefer just a tad longer, but I’m tall and have longer legs, so I need a longer length. They also have this style of denim skirt in a dark wash and distressed medium wash, which were so pretty!

As I was browsing the store, I found this pair of High-Rise Secret-Slim Pockets Flare Ankle Jeans on clearance in a size 12 from $44.99 to $11.99! These are very similar to Madewell’s Cali Demi-Boot Jeans in Tierney Wash, but these actually fit a bit more slim and for a fraction of the price, especially being on clearance! They are on sale online as part of Old Navy’s July 4th sale, but I think my store doesn’t usually carry them, since that was the only pair in the store, so that may have been why they were marked down. I tried on the Madewell pair back in the Spring, but wasn’t sure if I wanted to buy them, since I already had 2 pairs of jeans in my Spring capsule wardrobe. This pair came home with me and I wore them yesterday to my daughter’s doctor appointment and chemo treatment. They held their shape all day and I love them! I tried them on first with my white crew neck tee in my Summer capsule wardrobe.

I tried on the High-Rise Secret-Slim Pockets Flare Ankle Jeans with this Smocked-Yoke Ruffle-Trim Sleeveless Top in “pink tangiers” in a Large. I should have tried on a Medium as it was a bit wide, but I loved the color and the ruffle detail on the shoulders. You could wear this top with jeans or shorts and can even wear it to work with a skirt or pants.

This Sleeveless Button-Front Striped Shirt caught my eye and was curious to see how it would fit. Since using a capsule wardrobe for a few years, my favorite colors to wear are neutrals and my favorite pattern is stripes and this top is both! The size Medium fit great! I really liked this pair of Mid-Rise Twill Everyday Shorts in “sunflower gold”. These are a size 12. I have had these shorts in the “upper crust” and “white” colors for a couple of years and they are in my Summer capsule wardrobe again and I love them! The sunflower gold color is gorgeous! In the photo on the left, I did a half tuck with the top and on the right, I tied it at the waist, so these are two ways to wear this top.

A reader emailed me the other day asking about bermuda shorts and if there was any I recommended. I don’t have any bermuda shorts as I like to wear 5 to 7 inch pairs, but I recommended a few pairs I saw online that I would wear. I saw these Mid-Rise Slim Denim Bermudas in the store and was curious as to how they fit, so I tried them on in a size 12. They fit quite well and loved the style and color! I could even roll them up one turn so they could bit a bit shorter too. I tried on this Slim-Fit Rib-Knit Henley in “yellow stripe” in a Large. I have a similar one, the Caslon Henley Tee, in my Summer capsule, so wanted to see how this one compared. I loved the color and style of this henley top! It has a scoop neck and a straight hem which would make this top a great staple in your wardrobe.

Ok, I had to really hold myself back from buying these Mid-Rise Linen-Blend Shorts! I may go back and get this white pair and switch out my white twill shorts, but not sure yet. They have them online in 6 colors and you will love all the colors! I tried this white pair on in a size Large.

I saw this Square-Neck Button-Front Linen-Blend Midi dress in the “sunflower gold” color. Erin over at Cotton Stem tried this dress on in her Summer Capsule Wardrobe Ideas at Old Navy blog post and it looked so pretty! She wears the same styles that I like, a casual, effortless style. This dress is the same mustard-yellow tone as the shorts above, which is so pretty in person! I tried on a Large since they didn’t have a Medium in stock, but the Large was a tad bit big on the top. I think the Medium would have fit better. The top buttons are stationary and don’t unbutton, but the buttons on the skirt unbutton so you can either leave them all buttoned or just unbutton a few for a more airy look to the skirt. You could wear this dress alone or add a cardigan like this one or denim jacket like this one for added texture.

So, to sum it up, I bought just the High-Rise Secret-Slim Pockets Flare Ankle Jeans. I loved so many of the pieces I tried on and could have probably bought a lot more, BUT…since I use a capsule wardrobe, I utilize my core closet essentials each season and buy just a few pieces each season to keep my wardrobe fresh, keeping my spending at a minimum. Believe it or not, using a capsule wardrobe in my closet, helped get me out of debt (clothes, shoes and accessories can really add up!). 1. I have a question about tucking in. Is that the style now? Also, many models tuck in the front but not the sides or back. Is that a trend? Or is it just for photographing?
Your blogs are very helpful and I appreciate you taking time to model and give us subscribers inspiration. Thanks so much!!!

  2. Stephanie,

Great question! The half tuck is a casual way of tucking in a top. This type of tuck is used mostly in casual outfits, like with jeans, shorts and casual pants. If you are wearing dressy outfits, especially with a belt, you can do the tranditional full tuck all around.

  3. My faves on you are the yellow striped top with both bottoms and the yellow button-down dress!

  4. Leanne, that Antique Coral top looks amazing on you. That must be one of “your” colors.

  5. Hi Leanne, new follower here! I’m curious how tall you are, so that I can judge length of the clothes you try on. Thanks!

    Love your ideas!!

  6. Laura,

I’m 5’9″ and usually wear a size 10 in pants and Medium or Large in Tops.
