How To Create A Fall Transition Outfit: What To Wear Between Summer & Fall

Styling an outfit in the time between summer and fall can be tricky. Summer may be over according to the calendar, but in some parts of the U.S. it may still be warm during the day, making it difficult to know what to wear. That’s when you wear a “Fall Transition Outfit”. What is a Fall Transition Outfit and how do you wear it? Read on to find out more…

A Fall Transition Outfit is one where you wear 1 piece of the previous summer season with 1 piece you will wear in the fall. It may be a short sleeve tee with a pair of pants and either sandals or flats. Or, it could be a pair of denim shorts with a sweatshirt and sneakers. When I create my fall capsule wardrobe, I always include a few short sleeve tees to wear my pants and jeans. I live in northeast Alabama, where we have long summer seasons and short fall seasons. I wear short sleeves during the transition period between summer and fall. When the weather turns cool, I swap out my short sleeve tees with long sleeve tees!

This formula can work in other seasons, whether it is fall to winter, winter to spring or spring to summer.

How To Create An Easy Fall Transition Outfit

  1. Pick 1 top or bottom from your summer wardrobe (examples: short sleeve tee, tank, shorts, skirt)
  2. Pick 1 top or bottom from your fall wardrobe (examples: pants, jeans, skirt, long sleeve shirt, sweatshirt)
  3. Pick a pair of shoes from either your summer wardrobe or fall wardrobe (examples: sandals, sneakers, ballet flats, pumps)

Then, add a combination of these accessories to complete your outfits:

  • Add a Belt – Belts are back and I am excited to wear all the belts this fall! I recommend having a brown belt and a black belt in your wardrobe. I recently added J. Crew’s Classic Italian Leather Belts in both “brown” and “black” to my closet. I’m wearing the Classic Italian Leather Belt in “black” in my outfit.
  • Add Jewelry – Add a necklace, earrings and/or bracelet to your outfit in either gold, silver or rose gold. I took the picture below before I added jewelry, but on the way out the door, I added gold jewelry: these earrings, this necklace and this bracelet.
  • Carry A Bag – You can add a handbag or tote to your outfit in either a neutral color, accent color or a pattern. Since I wore my leopard pattern shoes, I kept my bag neutral by carrying this Portland Leather Crossbody Tote in “pebbled black”. Use my link here at Portland Leather to get 30% off your first order of $100 or more (excludes “Almost Perfect”).

Last week, one of the fall transition outfits I wore was this exact black tee with these wide leg pants in “distressed fatigue”. It was too warm to wear a layer from my fall capsule wardrobe, so I omitted a layer. I added a pop of leopard with these shoes for color contrast and this black belt to bring the top and bottom together.
