6 Ways To Wear Faux Leather Leggings

Faux Leather Leggings are a trending item to wear this Winter. You might be wondering how are they different from regular leggings? They have a texture that regular leggings don’t have and they also have a slight sheen. This makes them great to wear if you want to wear leggings, but want to add texture and a bit of interest to your outfits. Since they have “leather” in the name, you might also be wondering if these are slightly stiff like leather. Nope! They are so soft and flexible, like regular leggings.

When you wear leggings, you want to make sure the top you are wearing covers your “backend”. Because leggings are so form-fitting, they adhere to every part of your lower body that they cover. They are different than pants and jeans in this way, so the way you style them is a bit different too.

Here are some tips on styling faux leather leggings:
1. Make sure your faux leather leggings are quality material. You want to make sure they fit correctly and that they aren’t too tight or too loose.
2. Always wear tops with the faux leather leggings that cover your “backend”.
3. Loose fitting tops look best with faux leather leggings.
4. If you wear a tee or a top that is slightly fitted, wear a layer over it to even out the slimness of the leggings.

These Spanx Faux Leather Leggings (Regular, Plus & Petite sizes) are in my Winter capsule wardrobe! You may have to size up in these leggings. My exact pair is higher-priced, but the quality of material and craftsmanship is exceptional. Here’s a pair that’s moderately-priced. And, here is one at a budget-friendly price (Regular, up to XXL & Petite sizes)! At first I ordered a Large, the size I usually wear in leggings, but they fit really tight, so I sized up to a XL and they fit perfectly. For size reference, I am 5’9″ and usually wear a Medium in tops and a size 10 in jeans and pants.

If you would rather wear the classic black leggings, I recommend a good quality Ponte Legging (regular)(plus) (petite).

Here are 6 ways you can wear faux leather leggings. I am wearing the Black color, which coordinates with several tops in my Winter capsule wardrobe.

Tunic Sweater & Ankle Boots

In the first outfit, I’m wearing my soft v-neck beige tunic sweater (also here) (budget-friendly style) and black ankle boots (similar style). I added this plaid scarf (this style is from last year, but this year’s pattern is almost exact). I would add a pair of drop earrings, like these Alex Drop Gold Ivory Earrings.

Plaid Shirt, Cardigan & Ankle Boots

Red plaid has been so popular this Fall and now in the Winter! Here I’m wearing my Red Plaid Flannel Shirt with my Open Soft-Brushed Sea Green Cardigan and my black ankle boots (similar style). I added this Elisa Gold Necklace.

Striped Tee, Cardigan & Flats

I hope this budget-friendly Long-Sleeve Hi-Lo Hem Striped Tee (exact) (similar) comes back in stock because it fits so well! I’m also wearing my Camel Boyfriend Cardigan and my Black Minnie Ballet Flats. I added my Kendra Scott Rose Gold Pendant Necklace (similar) to complete my outfit.

Cowl Neck Sweater & Patterned Loafers

I’ve had this cowl neck beige sweater (same brand, similar style) for a few years now and love wearing it in the Winter season! Since it’s a neutral color, you can wear it with almost anything, casual or dressy. I added my Snake Pattern Loafers to add a bit of interest to this outfit. You could add a layer like this Excursion Primaloft Vest in the Muslin color, love this Leopard Dot Puffer Vest (in Regular & Plus) or this budget-friendly quilted vest (comes in several colors). You could also wear your warm wool coat like this Monica Faux Fur Collar Coat that comes in 4 colors (I absolutely love the camel, gray marl & light pink colors!).

Tee, Vest & Athletic Sneakers

These next 2 outfits are athleisure styles that you can wear while you are running errands, eating lunch with friends or family or wearing on the weekends. With the exception of the sneakers, these pieces are also from my Winter capsule wardrobe. If you are needing a striped tee, like the one in the outfit above, but if that one is sold out, this Gray Long Sleeve Tee also comes in the Striped pattern. Since this tee is slightly fitted, I added this Black Puffer Vest. This black vest is similar to my ivory one and this is a budget-friendly black quilted vest. To complete the athleisure outfit, I added my Nike Odyssey React Flyknit Sneakers (similar color).

Hooded Pullover & Slip-On Sneakers

I like to wear this Gray Spacedye Terry Hooded Pullover around the house on the weekends! You may remember me sharing this hooded pullover in the Try-on Session I did a couple of months ago. It’s SO SOFT and fits perfectly. I also finally found a pair of Black Slip-On Sneakers that are comfortable and don’t rub the back of my heels. I have tried several pair and returned them, until I ordered this pair of Madison Slip-On Sneakers in the “black faux leather” color. They instantly felt good on my feet with no break-in time! They also come in 3 other colors. These exact pair are a featured shoe in The Athleisure Capsule Wardrobe: Winter 2019 Collection and I also shared them as the “Fashion Favorite of the Week” in last week’s newsletter sent to all the Classy Yet Trendy subscribers (you can sign up for the weekly newsletter and new post notifications and receive a free mini capsule wardrobe eBook).

  1. I own the Spanx leather pants and have struggled to style them. Thank you for the suggestions! Any suggestions for wearing them in the “winter” in Florida? It is often too hot to wear a top layer or a long sleeve shirt. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Any,

You could wear a short sleeve swing tee or tunic style top and flats or loafers for a casual look. Or, a short sleeve hooded top and slip on sneakers for an athleisure style.

  3. Hello Leann,

This comes very handy. I’m not usually a legging person, but I got an excellent deal at JCrew.
Thanks so much for this article!

BTW, I chose your eBooks comparing to others because there are more outfits combinations and I love, love the monthly list. Getting ready is like a breeze now..

    Keep up the good work!

  4. I was thinking about investing in the spanx faux leather leggings. Your comment above:
“At first I ordered a Large, the size I usually wear in leggings, but they fit really tight, so I sized up to a XL and they fit perfectly. For size reference, I am 5’9″ and usually wear a Medium in tops and a size 10 in jeans and pants.”

Was this about the spanx leggings or the budget friendly ones?
Based on your description of yourself, it is very close to me. I am 5’9” wear a small or medium top and wear 8 or 10 pants (sometimes a 6 if they are vanity sizes) and I weigh between 145 and 150 pounds. I was thinking about getting the medium In the spanx. Didn’t want to be way off!

  5. Jacqueline,

I had to size up in the Spanx brand. I had ordered a Large in the Spanx brand when Nordstrom had them on sale in their Black Friday sale. When I received them and tried them on they were very tight. Because they had sold out at Nordstrom I ordered an XL from Spanx.com and those fit perfectly.
