Dressing Room Try-On Session: Madewell, Saks, Express, Abercrombie

Last Friday I spent the day going to a few stores getting ideas of what to include in the Winter season capsule wardrobe series eBooks. The past few weeks I have noticed that sweaters and straight leg jeans are trending for the Fall season, so I thought I would try a few on and share with you what I found in the stores.

I have received several emails and messages from you all saying that you really like the try-on sessions. I am glad to share with you all how things fit and look on me, an everyday size 10 woman, plus I have always enjoyed trying on clothes!

For size reference, I am 5’9″ in height. For tops, I typically wear a size Medium or Large, depending on the brand and style of the top (slim fit I usually wear a Large). For bottoms, my normal size is a size 10. My shoe size is 9.

Madewell

I went to Madewell first, since they had a few straight leg jeans styles I wanted to try-on. Madewell had a mask mandate that you had to wear your mask in the dressing room (I guess since the dressing rooms are in the central part of the store), so I am wearing my leopard print mask. I love this leopard print mask at Madewell and I really like the leopard print mask in this black and leopard print masks dual pack that is only $10!

I tried on these Classic Straight Jeans in Nearwood Wash in a size 30. The come in regular and plus sizes, petite and tall sizes too. I love the denim wash on these jeans, which is a classic denim tone. If you are looking for a straight style jeans as an alternative to skinny jeans, I recommend these. The hem fell at my ankle which is a nice length. I’m also wearing my black puff sleeve top and my leopard print mules from my Fall capsule wardrobe.

Next, I tried on these Slim Demi-Boot Jeans in Northaven Wash in size 30. The fit on these jeans were a tad more slim than the Classic Straight Jeans I tried on in the above photo. The denim wash just a hint more darker than the classic straight jeans. These are another pair of straight jeans than I recommend!

I saw this Black Stripe Whisper Cotton Turtleneck in a size Large (my usual size in Madewell tops) with the Slim Demi-Boot Jeans in Northaven Wash. I ordered J Crew’s Tissue Black Stripe Turtleneck the day before I went shopping, or else I would have bought this one. It would be a great layering piece for the Fall and Winter!

Saks Fifth Avenue

The next store I went to was Saks, since they carry some of my favorite denim brands like AG, Rag and Bone, Paige, Joe’s Jeans, etc.

The first pair of jeans I tried on there were the Rag &Bone Cate Mid-Rise Skinny Ankle Jeans. I had to size up to a 31 in these jeans. They had a gorgeous blue denim wash but I prefer a high rise jeans since I have a longer torso. They fit beautifully and would recommend them!

I tried on these Farrah High Rise Skinny Jeans 12 Years Fluid wash in size 31. I have to size up in AG jeans since they run small on me. Wow, these jeans a gorgeous! The denim wash on these are perfect, they have a bit of stretch to them to they fit great in all the right places, plus I really like the raw hem detail. Needless to say, these jeans came home with me!

I also tried on these Paige Hoxton High Rise Skinny Jeans Grey Peaks Wash in size 30. The gray denim color is so pretty and great for the Fall and Winter months. I already have three pairs of gray jeans, so I didn’t need these, but recommend them if you are looking for gray jeans. I also tried on this Rag & Bone Hudson Long Sleeve Tee “black heather” in a size Medium. The heathered pattern on this top is beautiful and would be a great layering tee to wear underneath cardigans or jackets. I really liked the top, but didn’t get it since I was buying the AG jeans.

Express

I saw several sweaters at Express online, so I went to the store and tried on a few sweaters and jeans. Express has an early Black Friday sale where if you are an Express Insider member, you get 50% off. If you are not a member, you still get 30% off!

This Mock Neck Dolman Sleeve Sweater in the “beige” color in a size Small. It seems their sweaters run a tad bigger, so the size small was a better fit. The beige color is so pretty and I like the ribbing detail on the material. The Mock Neck is like a turtleneck, but is a loose fit. I left it up in the photo but you could also tuck in the neck for a low mock neck style. See the “nude sorbet” color in the next photo! I also tried on these Mid Rise Ripped Raw Hem Skinny Jeans in size 10R. For mid-priced denim, these jeans fit really well! I love the ripped knee detail and the hem falls just above my ankle, which is perfect. I don’t really need a light wash jean at the moment, so I will look at these jeans again in the Spring.

And, this is the Mock Neck Dolman Sleeve Sweater in the “beige” color in the “nude sorbet” color, also size Small. I really like the creamy color of this sweater and it would look great with different shades of denim, black jeans, gray jeans, pants and skirts! I especially like how the wrist area of the sleeve is tapered. I recommend this sweater! I wanted to buy of these sweaters, but couldn’t decide on the color, plus I wanted to wait until they were on sale. I have on the Mid Rise Ripped Raw Hem Skinny Jeans in the 10R size.

Here is another pretty sweater, the Slouchy V-neck Tunic Sweater in “soft alabaster” and sized down to a Small. The v-neck as well as the soft color caught my eye so I had to try this one on! It’s a short style tunic length and I did a front tuck to give the sweater a fitted look. This sweater is warm and cozy and I recommend it. I am wearing the Mid Rise Ripped Raw Hem Skinny Jeans in the 10R size.

The next sweater I tried on, the Ribbed Crew Neck Sweater in the “oatmeal” color didn’t fit right. And, I sized down to a Small. I’ll be honest with you, the sleeves were too big and long and the collar was too wide. The ribbed material was pretty though. I grabbed these High Waist Supersoft Released Hem Jeans in 12R by mistake, but should have tried them in a 10R. The light wash is so pretty, but I’m not too fond of the different denim color on the released hem. I rolled them up too since they were a bit too long.

I was on my way out of the dressy room area when I saw this Cable Balloon Sleeve Sweater in the “gray” color hanging on a rack. The detail on this sweater is gorgeous and look at the sleeve style! They also have this sweater in an ivory color, which is also pretty. You could wear this sweater dressed up with a skirt or pants or casual with jeans. I’m wearing my Madewell Skinny Jeans from my Fall capsule wardrobe.

Abercrombie & Fitch

The last store I went to as Abercrombie. I wanted to buy the cream color cardigan that I included in the Teacher Winter 2020 Capsule Wardrobe Collection eBook. This is the first outfit I tried on. This Turtleneck Sweatshirt in the “light grey” color is in the Medium size. It is a slight crop style and the turtleneck can fold down. The puff sleeves gives this sweatshirt more of a feminine look! The top also comes in several colors and patterns. I also tried on these High Rise Mom Jeans in the “medium wash” button style in a size 30. These jeans were a bit snug in the waist and I wanted to try on a 31 to compare the two sizes, but they didn’t have that size in the store. There is slight distressing on these jeans giving them interest and I really liked the color tone of the denim and button fly detail is so pretty!

I also tried on these Curve Love Ultra High Rise Ankle Straight Jeans in “light medium wash” size 30, but like the pair above, I needed to size up to a 31. The store I went to were limited on jean sizes 29 and up. These are more of a true straight jean style and the raw hem adds to the relaxed casual style.

I loved the way this Sherpa Faux Leather-trim Jacket fit in the “white” color size Medium, so this jacket came home with me! I had a sherpa jacket from Gap years ago and I wore it a lot, so much that I had to donate it. I love the faux leather trim detail and it also comes in 3 other colors and patterns (the leopard pattern is darling!).

I grabbed this Queen Graphic Tee in size Medium because the graphic design and tee color was just too good to pass up! The color is a dark gray and the color looks great with jeans. It’s also available in the Rolling Stones design! I am also visualizing this tee styled with these black jeans, this black vegan leather jacket and these $34.99 black combat boots, which is a trending style now. Now, if I can just find a Journey tee (one of my favorite 80’s bands!).

When I am creating each season capsule wardrobe series eBook, I select clothes, shoes and accessories I believe that will not only coordinate well but that everyone may like and enjoy wearing. I often will buy pieces in the capsule series for myself and this was the case with creating the Teacher Winter 2020 Capsule Wardrobe Collection eBook! I included the Waffle Stitch Duster Cardigan and went to the store to buy that one, but found this Waffle Stitch Cardigan in the “white” color (the shorter length) in size Medium. It also comes in gray, oatmeal and dark blue. I really like the length of this Waffle Stitch Cardigan and it is SO SOFT! This one came home with me!

Here is another cardigan that came home with me, the Chenille Cable Cardigan in the “grey” color, size Medium. This cardigan comes in 3 other colors and this one is even more SOFT than the white one I tried on above! This cardigan looks gorgeous in person and the stitching detail and style is so pretty. I know I’ll be putting these two cardigans in my Winter capsule wardrobe, but may just have to start wearing these now!

I would have bought everything that fit, but since I use a capsule wardrobe, I only buy what I really like and can wear with multiple items in my closet. If you don’t use a capsule wardrobe or are creating a capsule wardrobe, I recommend several pieces in this post for your closet!
