29-Piece Fall 2020 Neutral Capsule Wardrobe

|

See everything in my Fall 2020 capsule wardrobe, including neutral color tops, bottoms, layers and shoes, based on the Simplified Style® capsule wardrobe.

For those of you that are readers of the Classy Yet Trendy blog, you know that I have been using a capsule wardrobe in my closet for several years. I absolutely love using a capsule wardrobe every season and know my favorite items that I enjoy wearing. I am so passionate about capsule wardrobes that I made it my full-time job to not only blog about capsules, but create the seasonal capsule wardrobes (in the Capsule Wardrobe eBook Store) for women all over the world!

If you are a reader of this blog, you know that I create my own capsule wardrobe and share every capsule here on the blog (here are all of my own previous capsules).

For my Fall 2020 capsule, I gravitated to all neutral colors. I have found myself loving neutral colors for the past several months! You may recall my Spring 2020 neutral capsule wardrobe, my first neutral capsule. I absolutely loved that one and enjoyed all the outfits I created from it.

I created my all-neutral capsule based on my eBook, the women’s Simplified Style®: A Year-Round Core Closet Essentials Capsule Wardrobe. In Simplified Style®, there are 400+ outfit combinations for the entire year, with wardrobes and outfits for each season of the year.

Simplified Style - A Year-Round Core Closet Essentials Capsule Wardrobe

You can use this same capsule wardrobe for your closet! From time to time, some readers will write to me asking, “Will I get tired of wearing neutral colors all the time?“, or “How I can I add color to my neutral outfits?” Since neutral color basic essentials are the core items in your closet that we use in all our outfits, chances are you may not get tired of wearing them, but if you want to change things up a bit, you can add some color by adding colorful handbags and accessories, like jewelry and scarves! For more on this, see the blog post, “4 Ways To Add Color To Neutral Outfits“.

How Did I Create This Neutral Capsule Wardrobe?

I created this neutral capsule wardrobe based on the capsule from my eBook, Simplified Style®: A Year-Round Core Closet Essentials Capsule Wardrobe. I also followed the 5 steps in my blog post, How To Start A Capsule Wardrobe: A 5-Step Visual Guide (since this is an all-neutral capsule, I omitted Step 3). You can also download, print and use this Capsule Wardrobe In 5-Steps guide sheet to help create your capsule wardrobe, which is on the Capsule Wardrobe Tools page.

First, I chose BLACK as my base color. Then, I selected a few tops, bottoms and layers in gray, white and beige. Since I included blue denim, which is a neutral, the chambray shirt blends in with the capsule, so the chambray isn’t a color, but works as a neutral.

Can You Have Patterns In An All-Neutral Wardrobe?

Yes absolutely! The patterns add interest to your outfits, but because they have neutral colors in the patterns, they will coordinate with your solid color clothes. Patterns like stripes, plaids, leopard print or snake print work beautifully in your wardrobe.

What’s In My Neutral Capsule Wardrobe?

Here’s everything in my All-Neutral Capsule Wardrobe…

Let’s start with the clothes. Anytime you create a capsule wardrobe, I recommend choosing the tops and bottoms first. I then, added a few light layers. Since I work at home, I only need light layers, like cardigans. I will add a jacket from my closet when I run errands, go to the grocery store or out to eat.

The clothes and shoes that are in the Simplified Style® eBook are noted after each item with an asterik *. I included 15 pieces from the Simplified Style® collection in my Fall 2020 capsule wardrobe and also 5 outerwear pieces in my closet in case I need to wear them when I’m out.

Tops & Layers

If you notice the leopard pattern tee, cardigan and shoes, I included these to add some interest to my outfits so my outfits wouldn’t be all solid colors. Since leopard is a neutral pattern of black and brown, it works in this capsule! You can also use a neutral pattern, like snake print too.

I also added this Grayson Flannel Shirt in the “Morgan” print. It is from their Liquid Flannel line, which is a lightweight shirt. Most flannel shirts can be frumpy and thick, but the Grayson Liquid Flannel shirts feel so soft and drape well!

You can get $25 off your order at Grayson.com when you enter the code “LEANNEBLACKMON” at checkout.

  1. I would love an all neutral casual e-book showing all the outfit combinations. I have the old version of simplified style but it has too many dressy items and so do the FM e-books. I would like the FM aesthetic but without skirts and dressy tops, but I don’t want leggings or joggers. I know your teacher book is geared also to retired women but it’s not me at all. I realize I could substitute, but I really don’t want to have to work so hard at it. Please consider doing an elevated but casual e-book in all neutrals. Thank you.

  2. Linda, I have actually considered doing an elevated casual Simplified Style® eBook and have received several requests for one!

  3. Love your capsules. Use them all the time. Is this neutral wardrobe part of the updated Sinplified Style EBook or is that update still forthcoming? I recently purchased the Simplified Style ebook and am eagerly awaiting the update.

  4. Deanna, this neutral capsule is my own personal capsule that I will be using for the Fall 2020 season. I share my own capsule wardrobes every season on the blog (see my previous season capsules here: https://classyyettrendy.com/category/my-capsule-wardrobes/). I used several clothes and shoes from the Simplified Style® eBook. I didn’t use all the pieces from Simplified Style® since I wear just casual outfits everyday and not dressy ones. I’m getting close to completing the updated Simplified Style® eBook, so look for the announcement soon.

  5. Love my stay at home mom capsule wardrobe…although I am retired. It flows well nothing is sitting idle. Looking forward to the winter one. I would like to have annual subscription option. Then I would purchase my capstone for the year

  6. As always, since I started following you, I have saved a ton of money! I’m wearing only what I love, with a few scattered pieces here and there, but it all works and getting dressed is so much easier. Even though we are still pretty much sequestered to home, I still go out for groceries and errands….as things hopefully open up, I can put more of my wardrobe to use. Thanks for a very classic and livable blog!

  7. I would love an elevated casual book as well. I am a librarian, and I wear jeans each day, but I have a mix of casual and elevated casual tops. I often dress in layers, because outside it can be freezing, but inside, it’s always stuffy. I think a capsule wardrobe would work well for my situation, but I don’t need it to be dressy. I love your website and clothing tips.

  8. Love this neutral capsule wardrobe. Do you have a 10X10 challenge this fall? Do you have any handbags for this capsule?

  9. Michelle,

I will probably be doing a 10×10 challenge this Fall. Since this is my own personal capsule, I’ll be using a few of my own handbags with my outfits. ????

  10. This capsule is the best! I have been dithering about with getting a fall capsule together as I am older, retired, still hunkering down from covid and do not like or need dressy clothing anymore. I LOVE this capsule and actually shopped the closet yesterday and found all the pieces (different brands, same styles and colors) except a flannel shirt. Immediately ordered one (40% off, Old Navy)! Today, I will finish up by getting the appropriate shoes/boots out and trying on jeans. Two days, capsule done! I did add tierra red tops and a long sweater from Old Navy as love the color- is is a spiced rust, not red at all. Looking forward to the new Simplified Style book, too. Thank you for all you do and all your hard work!

  11. Lynn,

That is great that you shopped your closet and that you had mostly all the pieces for the capsule wardrobe! I’m glad that you found a flannel shirt you liked. Old Navy has some pretty clothes at great prices.

  12. I would love this too! I like the Teacher capsule, but it’s just a tiny bit too dressy….while the SAHM is too casual for my tastes (and my age, imho 😉 )

  13. Exactly what Linda said –make this into an ebook please! A fun option could be a “zoom your style” and show an option to make the upper half of your outfit more zoom friendly (e.g. necklace, scarf, earrings). I love everything you lay out here, but I am not confident I could optimize and make all of the outfits myself. Thank you for all of the thought and time you put into your craft! It is so helpful!
