A “coatigan” is the perfect layering piece to wear from Fall through the Spring. There are lots of ways to wear this piece and it is a wardrobe staple!
What Is A “Coatigan”?
A “coatigan” is a mix of a cardigan and coat combined. It is a layering piece that is thicker than a cardigan, but not as heavy as a coat. The length of a coatigan is long and falls either at the knee or just below the knee. Some coatigans have a wide collar and others have a hood. It is very versatile and since you can wear it from the Fall through the Spring, it is considered a wardrobe staple in your closet. If you live in warmer climates where it’s impossible to wear a wool coat, a coatigan may be perfect for you!
Some retailers will name their products coatigans, while other retailers prefer to call them “sweater blazers”. The Juliette Collarless Sweater Blazer has been popular for the past couple of years and comes in several colors.
So if you want to wear an outerwear piece that will be a bit warmer than a cardigan, dressy like a wool coat, but without the heaviness, wear a coatigan!
Most of the wardrobe staples I am wearing in the blog post are included in my best-selling capsule wardrobe collection, Simplified Style®: A Year-Round Core Closet Essentials Capsule Wardrobe – The Dressy & Casual Collection. For size reference, I am 5’9″ in height. For tops, I typically wear a size Medium, but size up to a Large sometimes, depending on the brand and style of the top. For bottoms, my normal size is a size 10 / 30 waist. My shoe size is a 9 medium width.

4 Ways To Wear A Coatigan
The first two outfits are casual ways to wear a coatigan…
Outfit #1 – Striped Tee, Dark Wash Jeans & Booties
The first outfit I’m wearing with a coatigan, the Juliette Collarless Sweater Blazer (size Medium), includes this Striped Girlfriend Crewneck Tee (sized up to a Large for a relaxed fit). I’m also wearing these High Rise Dark Wash Button-Fly Skinny Jeans (size 30) and these Franco Sarto Sloan Bootie (nearly identical style here). This Striped Girlfriend Crewneck Tee is new and I love the material and fit! It has a straight hem that falls at the hip so you can leave it untucked or a front tuck for a casual look or you can wear it to work fully tucked with a belt. The color of the stripes are more of a dark indigo blue, so this tee will coordinate with navy or black. I have had these High Rise Dark Wash Button-Fly Skinny Jeans for a few years and I still love them. Even though they are “skinny” jeans, they feel great with the soft material and relaxed feel. I have had these Franco Sarto Booties for a few years and I still love wearing them. They are suede and are a taupe color. These Franco Sarto Shellson Booties are nearly identical to my Sloan style booties.

Outfit #2 – Graphic Tee, Straight Jeans & Sneakers
Here is a second casual way to wear a coatigan, the Juliette Collarless Sweater Blazer (size Medium)…with a graphic tee, jeans and sneakers. I’m wearing my Anine Bing Vintage Bing Tee (size Medium), AGOLDE Nico Slim Straight Jeans (size 30) and Veja Campo Sneakers in “extra-white/black” color (size UK 40/US 9). These Veja Campo Sneakers are new. I bought the Campo style since they are comfortable out of the box with no break-in time.

Outfit #3 – White Tee, Black Ankle Pants & Loafers
A dressy way to wear the coatigan, the Juliette Collarless Sweater Blazer (size Medium), is with a white tee, black ankle pants and loafers. You could add a bit of color to this outfit by adding a scarf, bandana or statement necklace. I like the Striped Girlfriend Crewneck Tee so much that I bought this Girlfriend Crewneck Tee in the white color (sized up to a Large for a relaxed fit). I have had these Wit & Wisdom Black Ankle Pants (sold out) since last year and I wish Nordstrom would bring them back! They feel like a ponte pant and are so soft and fit great. Here are a similar pair, Liverpool Kelsey Knit Trousers. And, my Gucci Brixton Horsebit Loafers (size 9). These shoes were a splurge and I definately love these shoes! They are comfortable out of the box and they feel good walking in them all day. If you are looking for a pair of loafers at a lower price point, I highly recommend these Sam Edelman Loraine Bit Loafers or the Sam Edelman Lior Loafers! They are nearly identical to the Gucci loafers and Sam Edelman shoes are usually comfortable out of the box!

Outfit #4 – Ivory Sweater, Midi Skirt & Neutral Mules
The last outfit with the Juliette Collarless Sweater Blazer (size Medium) includes a lightweight sweater, midi skirt and neutral mules. I’m wearing this Silk-blend Sweater in the white color (actually is an ivory color) (size Medium) with this Pull-On Black Midi Slip Skirt (size Large) and Finn Chain Mules in the “tan suede” color (size 9). You could wear this outfit to work (add pumps or heels as an option), to church or to an event. If the weather is cooler where you live, you could omit the mules, add black tights and tall black boots, plus add a scarf for warmth.
