Old Navy Dressing Room Try-On for a Spring Capsule Wardrobe

See everything I tried on at Old Navy from their Spring 2020 product line and which pieces I bought for my Spring capsule wardrobe!

The other day I went into Old Navy to see what was new for the Spring season. I saw that they had several new arrivals online, so I wanted to see them in person. OMG ya’ll, I found so many new things, I had to do a try-on session so you all could see everything I found in the store!

In determining my base color for my capsule wardrobe for the Spring 2020 season, I was trying to decide between the usual black color base or a navy blue base color. There were so many darling navy blue clothes, that I knew I wanted navy blue as my base color this Spring! Navy Blue is such a popular color to have in a capsule wardrobe for the Spring and Summer seasons.

I was totally surprised at how well a couple pairs of jeans fit! The first pair I tried on were these Mid-Rise Dark-Wash Pop Icon Skinny Jeans in regular length. These fit almost like my Madewell jeans and cost way less! I have an hourglass figure, so my jeans have to fit well in the waist. These jeans fit my hips perfectly! The second pair of jeans I tried on were the Rockstar Medium Wash Super Skinny Jeans. I couldn’t find a Regular length so I tried on the Long, which were just right. I loved the way these jeans fit too! They also fit perfectly on my hips.

So onto which pieces I tried on. I hope ya’ll like these pieces as much as I did! Find out which pieces I brought home with me for my Spring capsule wardrobe.

For size reference, I am 5’9″ and wear a Medium or Large in tops and a size 10 in jeans and pants. I wear a size 9 in shoes. For Old Navy clothes, I have to size up to a 12 in jeans/pants and generally a Large in tops.

First up is this Boho Tassel-Tie Top (Medium) in “red floral”, which is gorgeous! They also have it in a “navy floral” which is also pretty and a “black print”, which would be great for a black base capsule wardrobe. I came really close to buying this top, but thought since I was buying two patterned tops, I thought it may be too many prints in my Spring capsule wardrobe. I tried on the red floral top with the Mid-Rise Dark-Wash Pop Icon Skinny Jeans (size 12) I mentioned above. I love these jeans. If I didn’t already have my Dark Wash Button-Up Jeans, I would have bought these! I really LOVED this Scout Utility Jacket (Large). If I hadn’t recently purchased my Banana Republic Utility Jacket, I would have bought this one! How cute are these D’Orsay Flats in “Mustard” (size 9) and Faux-Suede Pointy Ballet Flats (size 9) in “navy blue”? I wanted to try on the D’Orsay Flats in the “desert rose” color but they didn’t have them in the store. The Mustard color is so pretty and looks like Spring! I remember when I was working at my old job, I bought a pair of these Faux-Suede Pointy Ballet Flats in the “black color” and absolutely loved them! They were perfect for me working at my desk job and looked great with all my outfits. Plus they are budget-friendly!

When I tried on the Shirred Raglan-Sleeve Top in “navy floral” (size Medium), it was perfect and knew the a few colors in the pattern would be the color palette for my Spring capsule wardrobe! They have this top in several other colors and the “red print” is pretty too. These Rockstar Medium Wash Super Skinny Jeans (size 12) are the ones I mentioned above that fit so well! I added this Shaker-Stitch V-Neck Cardigan (Medium) in “ivory”, which is a great outfit addition for the crisp and cool Spring days.

This Luxe Crew-Neck Tee in “lost at sea navy” is the softest tee! It feels like a jersey-type tee. I loved the navy color and I bought it! I didn’t like the white color, as it was not see through, but it showed my bra-line, so I passed on that color. I tried on the Large in the photo below. Since it was more of a slim fit, I bought an XL for a looser fit. I tried on these Mid-Rise Light-Wash Power Slim Straight Jeans. Straight jeans don’t fit me as well as skinny jeans, so I passed on these. But I loved the color of the denim!

I knew immediately when I saw this Banded-Collar Shirt in “navy dots”, that if it fit well, I would be buying it! I tried on the Medium first (shown below). Since it is a straight cut, I bought the Large, just to have a bit of room. These High-Waisted Power Slim Straight Jeans fit better than the power jeans above, I think because they have a higher waist. They were really cute with the raw hem detail, but I passed on these, since I already have a pair similar to these in a crop flare style.

Ya’ll I loved this Relaxed Chambray Classic Shirt (Large)! I loved the light chambray (see it below) a bit more since I don’t have a light color one (I couldn’t resist buying the light color shirt). Old Navy’s chambray shirts are so soft and fit great. If I didn’t already have a pair of olive jeans I would have bought these Mid-Rise Pop-Color Rockstar Skinny Jeans in “I Think Olive” (size 12). I love the olive tone on these. They would be so pretty in a capsule wardrobe for the Spring! I absolutely love these Leopard Pointy-Toe D’Orsay Flats (size 9)! I was on the fence about these shoes, because I already have a pair of leopard loafers. Old Navy has incorporated this leopard pattern in several pieces for the Spring. Being a light background, it makes it a good pattern for the Spring season. I love it on this Leopard V-Neck Tee (also plus size), this Leopard Tie-Belt Maxi Tee Dress and especially this Leopard Sheath Dress.

Here’s another top I couldn’t resist buying, especially since I’m a sucker for stripes, ha ha! This Striped Split-Neck Pullover Top (Medium) says it’s “blue/white stripe”, but it’s more of a gray color. I love the longer length and the v-neck button popover style. I eyed this top online and was so glad they had it to try on in the store! Here I’m wearing it with the Mid-Rise Pop-Color Rockstar Skinny Jeans in “I Think Olive”. I have wanted to replace my Madewell Denim Jacket. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fabulous jacket, but it fits a bit snug and tad bit short, so I was needing something a bit more loose-fitting. I tried on this Denim Jean Jacket (Large) in “new medium authentic” and it fit perfectly! It’s a tad bit longer than my Madewell Denim Jacket, so it falls right at my hips. At only $39.99 (on sale for $30.00 when I wrote this post), it is budget-friendly and the denim color will go with so many things in my closet.

It’s a been a while since I wore Old Navy’s Pixie Pants. Oh, how I have missed wearing them!!! When I was working at my old job, I had a black pair and a navy pair similar to these. BUT, the pair I tried on are the high-waisted style. LOVE, LOVE them! They are much easier to stay up, but you can still tuck in your shirts. Plus, they have that stretchy-style and moves with you all day. Needless, to say, these High-Waisted Pixie Pants (size 12) in “in the navy” came home with me! They will be in my Spring capsule wardrobe.

The material on this Pintucked Button-Front Chambray Swing Dress (Medium) is so soft and I love the chambray color. But, it was a bit too short for me since I’m tall. If it had a belt and was a tad bit longer on me I would have bought it. They do have Tall sizes online. For my shorter friends out there, you may like it!

I loved this Navy Striped Tie-Belt Shift Dress (Large), but it was a bit longer than I would like. The material is gorgeous and I love the tie belt accent. It does have a slit on one side of the dress so it is easy to walk and sit in.

I liked this Shirred Button-Front Blouse (Medium) in “calla lily white”, which is similar to the navy dot top above. This white top is just a tad bit see-through, but if you wear a nude bra, it will be fine. It would be a great top to wear underneath a cardigan (shown on the right), a jacket, or a blazer to work. I love how this Long-Line Open-Front Cardigan (Medium) in “soft pink” feels, SO soft! I loved this color, the “oatmeal” and the “camel”. They also have it in a light gray. This cardigan is a great layering piece for the Spring!

This Relaxed Chambray Classic Shirt (Large) in the “light wash” is the one I bought. It is similar to J Crew Factory’s Chambray Shirt in style, fit and color. I’m wearing it with the High-Waisted Pixie Pants in “in the navy” and the D’Orsay Flats in “mustard”.

I love the pattern on this Boho Tassel-Tie Swing Dress (Large) in “navy blue print”! I tried on the Large and it was a bit big on me. I tried on the Medium and it was too short! I’m considering ordering a Medium size in Tall, that way it will fit and be long enough. I added the Denim Jean Jacket in “new medium authentic” and the D’Orsay Flats in “mustard”.

On the way up to check out, I spotted this Vintage Crew-Neck Sweatshirt in “peachy treat”. It is a bit darker than shown online and the color is just lovely! I could see wearing it buy itself with jeans or the Pixie Pants and can also wear the chambray shirt, a navy tee, a white tee, or a striped tee underneath and leave them untucked for a relaxed look. I had to buy that one as well for my Spring capsule wardrobe.

I saw this Striped Luxe V-Neck Tunic Tee (shown below) online and wanted to try it on in the store, but they didn’t have my size. I love the banded surplice v-neck and the longer tunic length. The olive color is so pretty too!

So, which pieces did I buy? See everything I bought below. I would consider that an Old Navy Haul! I don’t buy several things like that at one time, since I have been using a capsule wardrobe, but couldn’t resist passing up those great pieces for my Spring capsule wardrobe!

UPDATE: I went back to Old Navy and bought the Long-Line Open-Front Cardigan in “soft pink”, High-Waisted Pixie Pants in “upper crust”, Shaker-Stitch V-Neck Cardigan in “ivory” and the Faux-Suede Pointy Ballet Flats in “navy blue”, which will all be in my Spring capsule wardrobe (coming soon to the blog)! I’m on the fence about keeping the peach sweatshirt as it doesn’t tie in with the elevated-casual style of my capsule wardrobe.

Like that you chose Old Navy with budget friendly outfits that so many of us are looking for.

  5. Gorgeous colors for spring and everything looks great on you! Can you comment on the fabrics? I often find Old Navy tops and dresses look cute at first, but wrinkle like mad as soon as I put them on. Thanks!

  6. I haven’t been inside an Old Navy for years! You’ve inspired me to make a trip there soon! Super cute tops & shoes!

  7. I love these pieces! I’m a newbie at the capsule wardrobe and thoroughly enjoy your posts and info and how you show us how to put it all together. I also live in Alabama and am “Fabulous Fifty”. I have had a hard time transitioning to less dressy church clothes, “going out clothes” and regular everyday clothes. Trying to be less frumpy. A: not good putting clothes together and so love your posts! Keep bringing them please!
    Christine

  8. Thank you Jen! How much wrinkling depends on the fabric. When I wash my clothes, I use a liquid fabric softener in the wash, then hang all my clothes (tops, jeans, layers) to dry. I never put them in the dryer. Letting them air dry preserves the fibers in the material and they last longer. I sometimes use a spray starch on materials, like linen and pure cotton, which helps to prevent wrinkling.

  9. Roxi,

Thank you! I absolutely love doing try-on sessions and sharing with you all how things fit and what they look like in person. I need to do a “Target run” next and see what new clothes they have for the Spring!

  10. Thank you so much Heidi! I really liked the color tones of the navy pieces they had in the store. I hope to put together my Spring capsule wardrobe soon, as we are starting to have Spring-like temps.

  11. Thank you Christine and hello to you also in Alabama! You’re going to love using a capsule wardrobe! Do you have my free mini capsule wardrobe eBook? If not, send me an email or subscribe to my newsletter and new post notifications to get the free mini eBook.

  12. I love this years selections for spring at Old Navy. I also loved your choices and had bought a few of the same too. Great taste!

  13. I have those jeans and LOVED them for about two months, but they have become very rough and baggy with wear. Much more quickly than previous old navy jean purchases.

But wonderful try on session! I might have to find a babysitter and go do the same. ????

  14. Wow, so pretty and budget friendly too. Bookmarked several things for my spring capsule wardrobe. You always have such a good eye for pretty things and you also don’t always spend a fortune so those of us on a budget find pretty affordable clothes too. Thanks again. I like your try on sessions. Always really good ideas.

  15. Eryn,

Do you dry your jeans in the dryer? I used to years ago and then I noticed my jeans would stretch more easily. I hang all my tops, bottoms and layers to dry now and it seems to extend the life of them significantly!

  16. Thank you Iris! I tend to pick pieces that work well in a capsule wardrobe, that coordinate with many other pieces. I love to share with everyone what I find!

  17. Cathy,

Thank you so much! I like finding those little gems in stores that work well in a capsule wardrobe! Old Navy has lots of great options for the Spring season.

  18. Oh my heavens, you’re a bad influence (in the best way possible)!!! I just bought the Vintage Crew-Neck Sweatshirt in Icelandic Mineral (I’m hoping it’s a nice dusty rose), the Shirred Button-Front Blouse in Calla Lily White (which may look terrible with my big boobs), and the Long-Line Open-Front Cardigan in Soft Pink (because pink is my JAM). I almost never shop at Old Navy, but these looked so pretty on you. Can’t wait to receive them!

  19. Leanne,

Here is my opinion as a french woman from Quebec, Canada…. Please, oh please, don’t hesitate to wear dresses a little over your knee like the one you tried and didn’t buy because you thought it was too short. I’m 68 and have a body measurements similar as yours. I wear my dresses and skirt just about 2 inches or sometimes 3 above the knee. And I still look good. So, as you are younger than me, try it. Your husband will be happy and I promise you won’t look too provocative or sexy. You would have a more youthful look. I know you’re a mother and so am I but try it. Anyway this is only a suggestion. I DO LOVE SO MUCH THE OUTFITS YOU BOUGHT for this spring. I LOOOVE NAVY so, I’m very excited at the next spring wardrobe you will publish. You can rest assured that I’ll be awaiting it. Take care. (I’ll try to show you a picture of me wearing a skirt!)

  20. Thank you Leanne! I love how you focus on clothes that are financial accessible to us! We are similar sizes
(though my feet are size 12s 🙁
which makes my decision about what to order so much easier!
Thank you for your Dressing Room Diaries!!

  21. Thank you Cathy! I found the best time to find plenty of options to choose from at Old Navy is at the beginning of the season!

  22. What size did you purchase in the peach sweatshirt? Wondering how it ran? Was it long enough in the regular or would you recomm tall? Tx!

  23. Lou Ann,

I purchased a Large in the sweatshirt. The bottom of the hem falls at mu hips. You could try the regular length first, but if you want more of a tunic length you could try the Tall.

  24. I loved your Old Navy post. I live in a rural area of North Carolina and my closest Old Navy is almost 2 hours away. By you doing this post I know which items to purchase. I ordered all the pieces you bought and look forward to the complete spring capsule wardrobe coming out. Your e books are wonderful and show how to dress without looking frumpy as I used to look before I found your site. Thanks so much for your help

  25. This was a great post!!! I just purchased 11 items!! Your size style is so similar to mine that you saved me having to go shopping. My office is business casual where jeans are okay, so I now have a complete spring wardrobe for work and weekends for just over $200!!!

  26. Wendy,

I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the post! You may like the Teacher Spring 2020 Capsule Wardrobe eBook, which will be published this Friday, February 7. It includes a few of the pieces from this post in the wardrobe!

  27. Can you reveal the date you will release the Essential spring capsule e book? I’m so excited and can’t wait to get the rest of the pieces to complete my spring wardrobe.
I’m wondering what colors you will be using with the navy base. I plan to order my completer items as soon as your book is available. You are awesome!

  28. Sharon,

The Essential Spring 2020 capsule wardrobe eBook will be published February 13. I haven’t confirmed the accent colors yet as I have been diligently working on the Teacher Spring 2020 eBook. Happy Capsuling!

  29. Love the post. I use a black base in my capsule. I love the Striped Split-Neck Pullover Top but the color is Blue/White Stripe. Do you have any suggestions to sub it out?
    Thank you

  30. Michelle,

Thank you for your question! If the blue stripes are a deep navy, the top will coordinate with black. I have a navy striped top from J Crew in which the stripes are a dark tone and the top goes well with black jeans and shorts.

  31. Hi, would you tell me the main difference in your essential vs. french capsule? Does the essential just have more colors included? I’m trying to decide which one I want to purchase 🙂

  32. Kara,

    Thank you for your email!
